It's one of the milestones that you look forward to as a young dancer...when you finally get your splits! It's a goal for many new dancers, young and old...but how can it be accomplished?
Like many things in life, it would be great if we could just snap our fingers and our goals were achieved but this, like most things, takes time, dedication, and determination!
Increasing flexibility is certainly not an easy feat. It is one that requires effort and a plan. In order to see progress in flexibility, stretching must become part of the daily routine. Significant strides can not be made with just the weekly stretching during one dance class. Stretching for 10-15 minutes one or two times per day is the only way to work towards a proper split. Stretching needs to have an even amount of time dedicated to both legs, not favoring the 'easier' side.
Dancers that make this commitment on their own, outside of class, see their goal of doing a split realized much faster and see improved flexibility in performing all dance steps.
So, encourage your dancer to take a few minutes of their day to dedicate it to stretching. It's an easy thing to do while watching TV, reading a book, or even studying! Maybe you could even join them!
